According to a news report from www.seacoastonline.com, Friday night might be the regular, simple family pizza night in the Rye home of Joseph and Mary Sayers, but on Sunday, Aug. 12 they’ll be in New York City making their favorite pizza recipe on camera for a panel of expert judges. The couple are finalists in the second annual Cavit Gourmet Pizza Classic hosted by Cavit Collection Wines in conjunction with Cooking Light Magazine, and they’re more than a little surprised by all the hooplah.

“I’m embarrassed!” says Joseph Sayers. “We just make pizza every Friday. We had a calzone recipe we used to make but we ate too much of it so we made it into pizza. We heard about the contest on the radio and just sent the recipe in through the online site. I wasn’t going to do it but my kids said, ‘Come on! Do it!'”

They are among only five finalists who will be competing on Sunday morning at New York’s Peasant Restaurant. The prize is an all-expense-paid trip for two to Italy and the illustrious title of “America’s Best Gourmet Pizza.” This year’s Classic attracted nearly 15,000 entries from wine and pizza lovers who submitted their favorite gourmet recipes.
