A writer for the Pennsylvania-based news site The Keystone recently praised the pies from Pizza Freak Co., the Montgomery County-based frozen pizza company, as “the best frozen pizza I’ve ever had.”

Pizza Freak Co. was founded by Chef Brad Kilgore, Chef Brad Daniels and Matthew McKenney. Their food has earned kudos around the country, including from Food & Wine, which named it one of the 10 Best New Chef-Made Products last year.

In his article titled, “This frozen pizza doesn’t suck—and it’s made in Pennsylvania,” The Keystone writer Patrick Berkery followed Pizza Freak from its beginnings in the food lab at Drexel University through two years of research and development.

Berkery noted that “even the top-tier frozen pizzas don’t come anywhere close to matching the quality of the freshly made pies from your favorite pizzeria. It’s strictly a ‘Meh, this’ll do’ meal.”

But Pizza Freak’s pies, inspired by the Detroit style, boast “light and airy crusts that don’t taste anything at all like something that was just sitting in your freezer beneath a family-sized bag of frozen peas,” Berkery wrote.

The article highlights Pizza Freak’s three-day fermentation process, unique Freakcaccia crust, premium tomatoes and cheese, and proprietary Freak Frame—the bakeable paper tray designed to release moisture and crisp the pizza all the way around.

“It was not designed for a price point; it was designed for quality,” McKenney said in an interview with Berkery. “The only thing in our food is food. It’s quality, clean ingredients, handcrafted the way great pizza shops have always made good pizza.”

Berkery’s enthusiasm for Pizza Freak Co. echoed a Philadelphia Inquirer story last year in which restaurant critic Craig LaBan said Pizza Freak Co. makes “one of the best frozen pies I’ve eaten.”

Pizza Freak is available at select independent retailers throughout the Philadelphia region and ships directly to customers east of the Mississippi.
