How will Indian fusion pizza go over at a New York-style pizzeria in Nevada? Ram Arora, who purchased Flat Earth Pizza in Carson City with his wife in April 2023, decided to find out.

Arora told the Nevada Appeal that he isn’t looking to venture too far from the popular restaurant’s roots. “It’s Italian cuisine,” he said. “We don’t want to forget that. We just want to bring a small hint [of Indian food].”

So he introduced a signature pie called From India With Love. And it turns out his culinary instincts were right. “So far, 99 percent of the non-Indian community has ordered this,” Arora said.

Under its previous owners, Flat Earth Pizza was voted as the city’s best pizzeria by Nevada Appeal readers every year since it opened in 2017. That winning streak has continued under Arora and his wife, Dilraj Kaur, who claimed the honor again this year.

Many of the pies on the menu sound as New York/Italian as Sinatra himself, such as the Great Bambino (shredded mozzarella, plum tomato sauce, pepperoni, onions, mushrooms, Italian sausage, black olives and fire-roasted bell peppers) and the Smoking Cosentino (smoked mozz, roasted red pepper cream sauce, fire-roasted red, yellow and green peppers, Italian sausage, onions, Pecorino Romano and basil).

But Arora and Kaur hail from Punjab, India, and they wanted to share a taste of their Far East home with the Nevada town they fell in love with more than a decade ago. Hence, the From India With Love pizza. Boasting a plum tomato sauce and fresh mozz, it’s piled with mushrooms, green onions, red onion, bell pepper, tomatoes, green chilis and garlic, then seasoned with Indian spices like turmeric, coriander and garam masala. The heat level can be adjusted according to the customer’s preference.

“Most people I have seen want it spicy,” Arora told the Nevada Appeal. For an additional flavor boost, the curry pizza comes paired with a mango chutney that packs sweet, sour and spicy notes.

“Biting into the curry pizza, one experiences a complexity of spice, not overwhelming but subtle, depending on how one ordered the curry,” the Nevada Appeal reporter notes.

Arora said he and his wife were devoted customers before they bought Flat Earth Pizza. They loved the food so much, it turned out to be “economical for me to buy the business.”

He added that a pizzeria is an ideal shared space to bring different communities and cultures together, including those who are suspicious of “outsiders.”

“Once they know that we are like them and we are working hard and trying to bring something good, then, you know, they adapt,” he said. “They want to try something new.”
