According to the Orlando Sentinel, “Who’s going to step up and deliver for the Birmingham bowl game?”

“Now that Papa John’s announced they will no longer be the title sponsor of the game in Alabama. The Louisville-based pizza company became the title sponsor in 2006. The game features teams from the Southeastern and Big East Conferences. The bowl, owned and operated by ESPN Regional Television, will be renamed the Birmingham Bowl as ESPN seeks a new title sponsor. Papa John’s and ESPN Regional had reached an agreement for the past two seasons with an option for a two-year renewal for 2010 and 2011 which the pizza chain decided not to pick up. In January, Papa John’s signed a mult-year deal to become the official sponsor of the NFL and the Super Bowl which could explain why the pizza giant decided not to renew its option for the bowl game. The new Birmingham Bowl will be Saturday, Jan. 8 at Legion Field.”
