According to a news report from thenews.org, “The effects of the recent economic recession have reached far and wide, and the $35 billion American pizza industry is no exception.” 
“We haven’t seen a marked decrease in the pizza industry overall because pizza has been – and remains – an affordable dining option even as more Americans tighten the reigns financially,” Mandy Wolf Detwiler, managing editor of Pizza Today magazine, said. “Wheat prices have tripled and cheese prices have doubled and while that doesn’t affect the consumer directly, it eats away at operators’ profits,” said the article. “Detwiler said operators must use discretion when altering their product, such as using a cheaper cost cheese or tomato product, as these changes are more easily detected by the consumer.”
