Shield's Pizza has been a Detroit institution since 1937.

In an effort to keep up with a growing and changing neighborhood, Paul and Peter Andoni, owners of Shield's Pizza since 1992, have decided to refresh the brand, starting with the Troy, Michigan, location, according to a story in Crain's Detroit Business.

The $1 million renovation will give the restaurant a fresh, updated, open and airy new look, a shortened menu, and create a design template that can be used for updating the other two stores (one in Southfield and the other in Macomb Township).

The Andoni's have hired Hassan Haj, a new ownership partner who brings his restaurant experience from Chicago, for the Troy location. Haj will maintain an ownership presence in the Troy store.

The restaurant will close from May 13 (at the end of the day), through August 1, according to the story, to allow for renovations to take place.
