Where can you find the “best pizza north of The Bronx”? It’s a bold claim, but Elvio Decilla says he’s got it.

The owner of Elvio’s Pizzeria, Decilla is a dough-slinging ex-New Yorker who has made the mountains of North Conway, New Hampshire, his home. His mother’s family hailed from Catania, Sicily, while his father’s family came from Naples—and Decilla has the recipes to prove it. He also has the backing of Boston food writer Jeff Gorra, who even goes so far as to claim neighboring North Conway—also home to the Flatbread Company—is “the pizza capital of New England.”

Decilla started working in his family’s Italian restaurant in New York at the age of 12. He opened his first Elvio’s location nearly 40 years ago and has a second store in Moultonborough, less than half an hour from North Conway. And when his team proclaims their food as the best pizza north of The Bronx (it’s the brand’s slogan, in fact), “they may actually be selling themselves short,” Gorra wrote recently for 98.5, the Sports Hub, in Boston. “I’d put it up there with most pies I’ve had in the Bronx, and it certainly crushes everything to the south.”

He describes Elvio’s pizza as a New York-style pie boasting a “thinner crust with crunch and full of flavor.” The restaurant also offers Sicilian versions of every pie on the menu.

“Elvio’s is the pizzeria where I will always order an extra slice (or two) and bring it back to Massachusetts with me,” Gorra wrote.

Readers of New Hampshire Magazine seem to agree. They named Elvio’s as the best pizzeria in the state’s White Mountain Region for 2023.

In addition to pizza, Elvio’s serves fresh bread baked daily and entrees like lasagna, spaghetti and meatballs with sausage, and carryout “Heat & Eats” offered at the Italian Marketplace next door. Pizzas on the menu include the Jenny Reb, topped with fresh broccoli, tomatoes, garlic, mozzarella, Parmesan, olive oil and spices, and the Jamie, featuring white clam sauce, chopped clams, garlic and olive oil, fresh basil, mozz, Parmesan and spices.

Calzones, hot and cold subs and salads round out the Elvio’s menu.
