10 entertaining tips from Hostess with the Mostess to help you throw an MVP — Most Valuable Party!

Big Game Table Cover

Turn your game day buffet into a football field! Cover the table with green felt, fabric or a grass-themed table cover from your local supply store. Next, create the yard lines and end zones, by adding strips of white ribbon, duct tape or paint. Miniature football player action figures are available at toy stores, and can be placed all over the tablecloth or in the middle, as a centerpiece.

True Colors Shine Through

Find creative ways to incorporate team colors into everything from the decor to the drinks. Hang up colorful paper lanterns, pennants, banners and team jerseys, and serve bottled sports drinks and sodas reflective of the team colors. Use opposing team colors on opposite sides of the room, or just stick to one team if you’re partial one way or the other!

Partyware & Penalty Flags

Play up the theme with partyware that features a football motif or your favorite team’s logo, along with bright yellow napkins reminiscent of “penalty flags”. (Just make sure guests know where to throw the “flags” when they’re done!)

Bring the Tailgate Home

Tailgating is synonymous with big football games for most people, so it’s a great idea to recreate that same energetic vibe at home. Chill and display bottled drinks and sodas in ice-filled coolers, serve up your favorite tailgate-style foods, have soft footballs on hand for guests to toss around during commercial breaks and bring in some outdoor lawn chairs or tailgating chairs for extra seating in the living room.

On The Menu

Finger foods and small bites are always crowd pleasers at football parties and allow your guests to graze throughout the game at their own pace. Opt for recipes that are both delicious and easy, and can be customized to personal preference, like Boboli Pizza. Create a buffet line featuring different pizza toppings and Boboli Pizza Crusts – I like the 100% Whole Wheat variety because it tastes great and is good for you, too. Then let each guest have fun making their own pizzas!

Get in the Game on Food Presentation

For example, serve guacamole in a rectangular dish, then add sour cream “yard lines” on top to create the look of a football field, or pipe ketchup and mustard “laces” onto mini hot dogs. For dessert, decorate chocolate cupcakes with grass-green frosting and a mini chocolate or candy football. To create candy footballs, press two unwrapped caramel squares together, mold them into the shape of a football with your fingers, then pipe white frosting laces on top!

What to Pour

In addition to the tried-and-true staples like soda, serve up two special “signature drinks” at the party – one for each contending team. Choose recipes that coordinate with each team’s colors, or give the drinks a creative name like the “Defense Daiquiris” or “Sweet and Sour Scramble.”

Involve Everyone with Activities

Plan some fun activities for your guests. Football crossword puzzles and word searches can be found easily online, and football charades are an engaging activity for younger children. Print out a quiz related to the game, and include some questions you don’t need football knowledge to answer correctly, like what team will win the coin toss. Give out prizes to the winners.

Let Guests “Play” Too

Set out some fun and inexpensive novelty game gear for guests to “play” with during the game. Things like ref whistles, foam fingers, football maracas, red challenge flags, yellow penalty flags and even football-shaped sunglasses and hats are perfect choices… and make for fantastic party pictures!

Guests Show Their Team Spirit

Ask guests to come dressed in their favorite team’s colors or in “game theme” – as a football player, cheerleader or “fanatical fan”. And don’t forget to dress up yourself, too! Referee attire is a great fit for the host. Be sure to capture it all on camera!
