Best Pizza in America Chosen in Orlando

Michael Amheiser takes home the prize for top pizza pie

Oxford, Miss. (September 8, 2008) – Michael Amheiser of Pizza Dock in Fredricktown, Ohio, became the American Pizza Championship (APC) Winner with his deliciously hearty Mike’s Favorite pizza at this year’s Orlando Pizza Show hosted by PMQ’s Pizza Magazine and held in conjunction with the Florida Restaurant & Lodging Show September 5-7 at the Orange County Convention Center.

Amheiser started the day by winning the APC Semi-Finals, and just when his excitement started to settle, he beat out APC champion, David Smith II, and APC finalist/Best of the Southwest winner Steven Saccone, crowning him the Best Pizza Maker in America! Now Amheiser will advance to the America’s Plate Competition at PMQ’s New York Pizza Show in March 2009 where he’ll compete against at least seven other countries for the title of World’s Best Pizza Maker and go on to represent America in the upcoming European competition. “I almost didn’t make it to the competition this year,” says Amheiser. “I’m sure glad I did.”

Amheiser has been in the pizza business for 20 years, opening his first carryout and delivery store, Pizza Dock, in 1988. His 600 sq. ft. business holds its own in the small Ohio burg of 2,500. When he’s not making award-winning pizza pies, he dedicates his time and extra money to an orphanage in Kenya that he’s been visiting since 1999 at the invitation of a local pastor.

Brush homemade garlic butter (blend of Amish butter, margarine, spices and Romano cheese) into a deep dish pan and stuff the crust with Wisconsin award-winning provolone. Top the pizza with fresh chopped garlic, onion, green pepper, mushrooms, hard salami, pepperoni and bacon, allowing the juices from the meats to seep down into the pie. Sprinkle with basil and Romano cheese after pizza exits the oven.
