Artificial intelligence is the driving force behind a new text-to-order platform offered by Jet’s Pizza, the Sterling Heights, Michigan chain with more than 380 stores in 19 states.

Jet’s has partnered with OrdrAI to offer what it calls “an industry-first ‘text-to-order’ technology driven by an artificial intelligence engine.” The chain is currently offering 20% off pizzas to customers who use the feature at participating locations.

Also based in Michigan, OrdrAI is a high-tech startup operating out of Ann Arbor. The two companies have worked together to craft the technology and have already processed more than 1 million text orders and launched the platform in more than 75% of Jet’s stores, according to a press release.

The text-to-order technology allows customers to text a Jet’s store using the same local phone number they would use to call in an order. They can text their entire order in one message, including indicating pickup or the delivery address. The system then facilitates payment, processes the order, sends the order information into the store, and responds with confirmation and order timing.

Customers can also save their credit card information and set a pin to reuse that same card during future orders.

“I think it’s fair to say that text-to-order is the easiest ordering method in all of food ordering, not just pizza,” says Aaron Nilsson, chief information officer for Jet’s America. “It’s the future. It is a premium experience that pairs well with our premium-tasting pizza. No apps to download, no Alexa to buy—just a great experience.”

The system can also answer basic questions about store hours and the menu, and there is an SMS marketing engine built in to perpetually boost sales for Jet’s restaurants.

“We teamed up, we hustled, we innovated, and we made something great,” says John Jetts, president of Jet’s Pizza. “I am sure others will copy us in the future. But we’re from Detroit—we’re used to that.”
