A plant-based pizza restaurant in Pasadena, California, aims to make its proprietary vegan pepperoni topping—called peperone—available to hundreds of other pizzerias in California and Nevada through its new foodservice distributor, Jacmar.

The Pizza Plant offers its own peperone-topped pie, called the 36 Percent, but it first became well-known for a 13-topping, CBD-infused, plant-based Vegan Nacho pizza. The company expanded this year to sell organic take-and-bake vegan pizzas at 11 Whole Foods Market stores in California and has plans to open more locations across the Southern Pacific region.

The plant-based peperone topping, made of spicy tofu, will “give pizza operators the opportunity to take advantage of the trending demand and to add a truly flavorful topping to their pizza menu,” The Pizza Plant founder Marvin V. Acuna told Veg News. “Our corporate vision is to enable pizza operators to satisfy the growing demand for plant-based toppings and build a menu that appeals to many more people.”

After opening in June 2018, The Pizza Plant immediately set out to give back to the community. The eatery struck up a relationship to provide free pizza to clients of Pasadena’s Union Station Homeless Services (USHS). For every pizza sold at its store, The Pizza Plant donated a pie to USHS. In April of this year, the company, which now offers shipping nationwide, asked customers anywhere in the country to purchase and donate pizzas to USHS after learning the nonprofit needed help feeding economically disadvantaged children who could no longer eat lunch at their schools due to the -19 shutdown.
