An upstart San Francisco pizza brand that began as a humble pop-up is now breathing rarefied air: Outta Sight has been named one of Food & Wine’s “10 must-visit pizzerias in the U.S.” for 2025, right up there with L’Industrie and Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana.
Yes, folks, it’s that time of the year again—the U.S. pizzeria rankings are back, with Food & Wine leading the charge. In 2023, the publication named the “28 best pizza places” in the country, but this one is different, emphasizing the “most compelling” pizzerias rather than the “best.”
And when you’re talking about compelling pizza spots, it’s hard to argue against putting John’s of Bleecker Street, the New York icon that topped the list, on your itinerary if you haven’t been there yet. Not to mention Dan Richer’s Razza Pizza Artigianale in Jersey City (No. 6) and Sarah Minnick’s Lovely’s Fifty Fifty in Portland, Oregon (No. 10), both of which have ascended to legendary status.

“American pizza has never been better,” the article states. “With so much good pizza across the country, we’re naming the most compelling pizza destinations that you should add to your bucket list as part of our 2025 Global Tastemakers awards.”
John’s of Bleecker Street certainly has plenty of experience serving up coal-fired New York-style pies. The brand was founded in 1929, long before “New York style” was even a culinary term, and, as Food & Wine notes, “it still draws a line down the block.”
Fortunately, the list doesn’t focus entirely on legacy brands. Outta Sight took eighth place this year, and it started out as a pop-up in 2020 before its first brick-and-mortar store opened in 2022, followed by a second location this past January. Chefs Eric Ehler and Peter Dorrance serve up New York-style and tavern-style whole pies and slices like the Madonna, which they describe as “a bit New York cheese, a bit fancy Californian Neapolitan,” and the Ruby Pie, inspired by Rubirosa in New York.

But Outta Sight also keeps customers on their toes with “weird/fun specials” to gauge reaction and create excitement. Earlier this month, they introduced The Iggy, a vegan pie “named after our favorite rocker with a lust for life.” It showcases house burrata, Prime Roots plant-based salami, basil, garlic, olive oil, marinara, chili flakes and oregano. To celebrate 4/20 this year, Ehler and Dorrance tested out pies like the Weed Eater (house dill pickles, corned beef, mozzarella and smoky ranch) and the Gut Buster (hot links, beef chili, mozzarella and raw white onions).
And at the new Chinatown location, you might also get your Asian-fusion pie topped with Peking duck and hoisin sauce, Korean-style corn cheese or even shoyu-glazed Spam with pineapple and jalapeńos, as the San Francisco Standard reported earlier this year.
According to Food & Wine, Ehler and Dorrance “make their pizza with conventional yeast but let it ferment as long as sourdough, so the extra-large crust is thin, crispy and complex.” SFGate chimed in on Outta Sight’s quality in 2023, with food reporter Nico Madrigal-Yankowski declaring, “Whether you dub it the most NYC-like pizza or a hella San Francisco pie, the best slice in this 7-square-mile metropolis is at Outta Sight Pizza.”
Here’s the complete list of Food & Wine’s must-visit U.S. pizzerias for 2025:
1. John’s of Bleecker Street, New York, NY
2. L’Industrie, Brooklyn, NY
3. Bungalow by Middle Brow, Chicago, IL
4. Buddy’s Pizza, Detroit, MI
5. Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana, New Haven, CT
6. Razza Pizza Artiginiale, Jersey City, NJ
7. Quarter Sheets, Los Angeles, CA
8. Outta Sight, San Francisco, CA
9. Rose Pizzeria, Berkeley, CA
10. Lovely’s Fifty Fifty, Portland, OR
They’re all must-visits for sure. But since there is “so much good pizza across the country,” we do wish the authors would spend a little more time in the American heartland and perhaps expand the ranking to 20 pizzerias next year. Open your mind, Food & Wine, and it just might get blown.
