Since the advent of the U.S. pizza restaurant industry in the early 20th century, male pizzaiolos have credited their mothers and grandmothers for their recipes and often named their restaurants after them. But those same women remained in the background, largely unrecognized, while the men won all the praise—and called the shots. Fortunately, women have stepped forward as owners, chefs and innovators in recent years, thanks to two developments: Alexandra Mortati, creative director of Orlando Food Sales, launched the Women in Pizza organization in 2019, and pizzaiola/influencer Christy Alia founded Women’s Pizza Month in March 2021.

Working separately but harmoniously, they sparked a movement that is transforming our pizza community. Today, women have emerged as solo owner/operators or full partners and as some of the country’s premier pizza chefs. There’s still progress to be made, of course. But this free downloadable report demonstrates that women are truly a force to be reckoned with—as gifted pizza makers, as business-minded visionaries, and as the leaders and innovators our community needs to thrive in a fast-evolving world.
