(Press Release) SOUTH KINGSTOWN, RI: The Hunger Task Force, a joint initiative of the Jonnycake Center of Peace Dale and the URI Feinstein Center for a Hunger Free America, is preparing to hold its Sixth Annual Community Hunger Awareness Day event on Thursday, June 7. The event will take place at Marina Park in South Kingstown from 5:00 – 7:00 pm (rain date is June 14).

The community is invited to join with neighbors at this event to enjoy free Pizza and Ice Cream and great entertainment to raise awareness of hunger in our community. The event also includes a food drive for the Jonnycake Center of Peace Dale’s emergency food pantry.

Performing at 5 pm is internationally renowned country blues singer guitarist Paul Geremia. Paul has eleven albums to his credit and has headlined venues throughout the US, Canada and Europe.

The Westmoreland Street Jammers will close the show with their signature big sound including three lead guitarists and a full complement of vocalists. These veteran musicians have rocked South County at community events, private parties and nightclubs since 2006.

Between the performances attendees will attempt to beat last year’s record of 116 people who formed the World’s Biggest Human Pizza. Hunger Task Force member Steve Maciel stated “Folks who want to be part of this historic event are invited to come dressed in pizza colors of red, white and brown. Don Bousquet and Son Aerial Photography will be documenting the World’s Biggest Human Pizza record from the sky!” Other activities include seed planting for children, cooking demonstrations, Healthy Communities by Design and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) outreach and information.

The event is free of charge, but attendees are asked to bring donations of non-perishable food to contribute to the Community Hunger Awareness Day food drive. Pizza and ice cream are being donated by local vendors and will be served free while it lasts.
