Starbucks announced this week that it will eliminate plastic straws from nearly 30,000 locations worldwide by 2020.

In April, Pizza Hut made a pact along with other UK businesses that it would cut down on its plastic waste. Pizza Hut supply chain head Steve Packer shared that six months ago, the company removed plastic straws from its U.K. branches, replacing them with paper straws. Plus, instead of continuing to place straws next to the drinks dispensers for customers to take as they please, Pizza Hut moved straws to the bar area so that they must be requested. The result: plastic-free straws on top of a 90% reduction in straw use overall.

In February, PMQ reported about how a 5-year-old customer inspired the 470-unit Pizza Express chain to eliminate its straws.

Restaurants in Maine, including a 900 Degrees in Portsmouth, are offering "paper straws on request," in an effort to eliminate plastic straw waste, according to seacoastonline.com.
