You’ll find the world’s best pizza—probably served on a paper plate no less—at a shop in New York City, at least according to the editors of Time Out.

The online publisher called upon the expertise of its editors around the globe, from London to Hong Kong to Cape Town, to compile a list of what it calls “the greatest pizzas on the planet right now.”

“Whether you’re [a] margherita-loving purist or an all-the-toppings enthusiast, a fan of New York-style, Detroit-style, Neapolitan-style or your own wacky style, everybody [has] their definition of a dream pizza,” the Time Out article states. “But cities all over the world have put their own spin on the dish, too, and that’s why we called on our international network of editors and writers to share the weirdest, tastiest and most lip-smacking pizzas where they live.”

Topping the list of the best pizzas in the world was Mama’s Too, owned by Frank Tuttolomondo—specifically the Cacio e Pepe pie, which features whipped mascarpone, aged mozzarella, Pecorino Romano and Parmigiano Reggiano.

As Time Out Food & Drink Editor Morgan Carter wrote, “I ventured up to Mama’s Too last summer to see a man about an elote slice, but when I made my way past the threshold of the door, I was soon tempted by a square that was quite literally hidden under a snowstorm of pecorino and Parmigiano Reggiano shreds. One quick melt in the oven later, and all the flavors sang in perfect harmony—creamy and light mascarpone, a bit of funk from the aged mozzarella and all the tangy, stretchy cheesiness I could ever ask for.”

The article spotlights a total of 18 pizzerias around the globe, but only one other U.S. eatery made the list: Milly’s Pizza in the Pan in Chicago, ranked at No. 12.

Jeffrey Mai, editor of Time Out Chicago, noted that “it takes a lot to stand out” in a pizza-crazy city like Chicago. “Yet owner Robert Maleski managed this remarkable feat when he launched Milly’s during the pandemic, elevating a timeless recipe. The dough is baked with a ring of mozzarella around it, which produces a striking, caramelized crust. My favorite is the Untitled #1, crowned with zesty pepperoni, jalapeños and chunks of fresh mozzarella. It was Maleski’s first creation and, in my opinion, the perfect harmony of flavors and textures.”
