Wiseguy Pizza and Matchbox, two pizza concepts owned by Washington, D.C.-based Thompson Restaurants, has been making mealtime more affordable for cash-strapped customers this week.

As part of Thompson Restaurants’ Hi-Five promotion, guests can get 20% off their entire meal at both pizzerias as well as at all other restaurants owned by the company. The promotion started running on Monday, January 6, and continues through January 12.

For dine-in service, customers can present a promotional code (MBHIGHFIVE for Matchbox and WGHIGHFIVE for Wiseguy Pizza) to their server to get the discount, while online orders require the code at checkout.

According to a press release, the Hi-Five promotion “represents the company’s commitment to providing value to its loyal customers while welcoming new guests to experience their varied dining concepts at the start of 2025.”

Thompson Restaurants, a division of Thompson Hospitality, is a Black-owned company that made news in October 2024 with its sensitive (and savvy) response to a controversy surrounding D.C.-based rival &pizza. The latter brand had stirred up outrage with a new menu item, called the Marion Berry Knots, that poked fun at the late Washington, D.C. mayor’s alleged drug abuse. Barry’s wife denounced the marketing ploy, and several groups called for a boycott of &pizza. Warren Thompson, president and chairman of Thompson Restaurants, expressed his own disgust with the &pizza promotion and stepped in with a special offer of his own: Wiseguy Pizza would donate a portion of all sales to the Marion Barry Jr. Legacy Foundation through the end of November 2024.

In addition to Wiseguy Pizza and Matchbox, Thompson Restaurants’ concepts include Big Buns, Hen Quarter, CUT132, Milk & Honey, The Delegate, Locals Tacos, Makers Union, Ralph’s ATR, The Ridley, The Rub, Social House and Velocity Wings.
