Pizza Hut is celebrating the 40th anniversary of its BOOK IT! program by giving away one million free Personal Pan Pizzas. The promotion happens to coincide with both National Book Month and National Pizza Month.

Launched in 1984, the BOOK IT! program was designed to instill a love of reading in children, and this year, for the first time, people of all ages can join in the celebration. Readers can get a free Personal Pan Pizza with an $8 minimum purchase as part of the promotion.

The BOOK IT! program, which originally cncouraged students from Pre-K through 6th grade to set and achieve reading goals, has long focused on fostering a personal connection with reading. Now, to mark its 40th year, Pizza Hut is expanding the celebration to include everyone—families, friends, and communities—inviting them to enjoy books together.

“I’m incredibly proud of what the BOOK IT! program has achieved over the past four decades,” said Pizza Hut U.S. President Carl Loredo. “It’s inspired more than 70 million children to discover the magic of books, helping to build a lifelong love of reading. As we’re celebrating 40 years, we’re excited to invite readers of all ages to rediscover the joy of reading—one book (and pizza) at a time.”

In recent years, Pizza Hut has updated the BOOK IT! program to meet modern needs, introducing digital reading logs and virtual classrooms to make participation easier for schools and families. The program remains free, encouraging parents and educators to sign up at bookitprogram.com to keep the tradition of reading alive.

To celebrate the 40th anniversary, Pizza Hut is sharing a few facts about the program:

  • Since 1984, more than 1.5 billion pizzas have been awarded to young readers.
  • From 2013 to 2023, Pizza Hut gave away over 56 million Personal Pan Pizzas—enough to stretch across the U.S. twice!
  • U.S. Presidents, including Ronald Reagan—who was in office when the program was launched—have supported the program’s mission to inspire youth to read.
  • From 2019 to 2023, Pizza Hut partnered with First Book, a nonprofit that provides books at discounted or free rates to educators serving children in Title 1 schools, impacting over 391,000 students in just five years.

To redeem the offer, use the code “BOOKIT40” at checkout online or through the app. The offer is valid from October 1 to October 30, or until one million pizzas are given away, at participating locations.

Guests can also purchase the BOOK IT! Bundle, which includes two large, one-topping pizzas and breadsticks, with a portion of the proceeds going to support the BOOK IT! program.
