Stuck in a strange city and craving a good pie? The Pizza Compass, a new app for iPhones and iPads, gives you the name of the closest pizza joint and features a rotating slice that literally points you in the right direction. Once you get close enough to the restaurant to smell the pies, the slice will even start giving off steam.

Form Strategic Alliances

The practice of forming strategic alliances with other businesses to spread the word about your pizzeria has been around forever. There's no time like the present to try it again. Decide what makes you different; be creative in finding partner businesses and outline what's in it for them; experiment with bartering as well as giveaways; and always have an end goal in mind.

Restaurant Sales Hit Record High

Restaurant sales bounced back after a sluggish first quarter to a new record high in April, according to the National Restaurant Association's chief economist Bruce Grindy. Sales at eating and drinking establishments totaled $45.9 billion last month on a seasonally adjusted basis, an increase of about $200 million above the previous high recorded in December 2012. The NRA's data suggests that more improvements are in store for the coming months.

With warm weather finally on the way, SPIN! Neapolitan Pizza in Kansas City is inviting customers to get into shape by riding bikes – and then reward themselves with pizza. The weekly bike rides are expected to attract hundreds of participants of all ages. For every rider that participates, SPIN! will donate a dollar to Heart to Heart International, and riders themselves get a 10% discount on pizza after the rides. The promotion's motto: "We Ride, Then We Eat Pizza."
