Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza & Wings only has 50 locations in six states, but Newsweek readers say it’s the best pizza chain in America.
Newsweek wrapped up its readers’ choice poll this week after launching it in early July. Readers were asked to choose between a total of 15 pizza chains, including several—but not all—of the largest brands; Pizza Hut was excluded. Newsweek said its selection of nominees was “editorially driven with contributions from a panel of travel experts,” and Newsweek editors decided the final list.
Among the country’s largest pizza chains, Marco’s emerged as readers’ No. 2 choice, while Domino’s, the biggest in the world, ranked No. 9.
In the final tally of readers’ preferences, Anthony’s also edged out other bigger name brands like Mountain Mike’s Pizza and Mellow Mushroom while Papa Johns, although nominated, didn’t make it into the top 10.
“If hand-picked Italian tomatoes and freshly grated Pecorino Romano cheese perfectly char-grilled at 900° sound delicious, then make Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza & Wings your next stop,” the Newsweek editorial team wrote. “This small chain with locations in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, New York and Florida serves up big flavor with Margherita and prosciutto pizzas alongside Buffalo wings and meatballs your Nonna would approve of.”
Anthony Bruno, a New York transplant living in South Florida, founded the chain in Fort Lauderdale in 2002. Bruno served as the company’s CEO until 2017.
The brand he founded is celebrating its Newsweek win with a limited-time menu featuring a Hawaiian pizza, sweet chili wings, lemon pepper wings, BBQ wings and a cocktail called the Spicy Pineapple Margarita with Tajin.
“This isn’t just any award,” the company said in a press release. “It’s a win powered by our guests, whose love for our coal-fired pizza made this possible. We’re grateful to every fan who voted for us.”
