Surf Brewery®, a small commercial craft brewery, open since 2011, with an onsite tasting room and homebrew shop, announced that they are releasing their first barrel aged beer for sale at the brewery on Saturday, November 29. November 29, is recognized as Small Business Saturday, the day after the commercial Black Friday. This limited release first beer in their Scientific Series™, dedicated only to barrel aged beers, is a Flanders Style Red Sour Ale.
The culmination of close to three years of barrel aging in French oak and artful blending at their newly established barrel aging warehouse in Moorpark, CA., has resulted in this bright, Belgian Flanders Style Red Sour Ale. An elegant reddish-brown hued liquid releases a bold tartness in both aroma and flavor that is complemented by crisp oak tannins and round fruitiness characteristic of this style of traditional sour ale. Coming in at 6.4% ABV, 14.5 degrees Plato, 13 IBU’s and 27 SRM.
Doug Mason, co-founder, and heading up the barrel program, mentions after tasting the finished beer, “This is exactly what we were hoping for after the long aging process. A great traditional Belgian style sour, brewed in California.” Final blending production for this first sour offering occurred late summer and early fall, soon after establishing the new barrel warehouse in Moorpark, CA. Traditional cork and cage bottle packaging was all performed by hand at the new warehouse. The bottles were brought back to Ventura for labeling, aided by our friends at Ventura Limoncello, and each of the 760 limited release bottles has been individually numbered for posterity. The Scientific Series™ bottle label is very different from Surf’s traditional silkscreened monochromatic classic surfing images. Doug adds, “The beer is very different and so we thought should be the label.” Due to the small quantity of bottles available, they will only be sold at the brewery in Ventura.
