According to a news report from abc15.com, “Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps has set records at this year’s games in Beijing, but he’s done so with the help of consuming nearly 12,000 calories per day.”

“Phelps, 23, will swim a total of 17 times over nine days and told NBC that eating and sleeping are all he does with his time while out of the water,” said the story. “Eat, sleep and swim,” said Phelps. “That’s all I do.” When discussing what he needs to win medals during NBC’s coverage of the games Phelps stated, “Get some calories into my system and try to recover the best I can.” The average 23-year-old man needs around 2,000 calories per day, but Phelps consumes nearly six times that amount (…including an evening meal consisting of a pound of pasta and an entire pizza).”
