PMQ Releases List of Top 200 Pizza Chains

PMQ’s Pizza Magazine Offers an Analysis of the 2008 Pizza Industry in Its Pizza Power Report

Oxford, Miss. (September 18, 2008)—U.S. pizza sales topped $36 billion last year, with independent pizzeria operators accounting for more than 53% of those sales.  From 2007 to 2008, 2,056 new pizzerias opened their doors to the public, bringing the total number of U.S. pizzerias to more than 76,000. Understanding the trends in the pizza industry is vital for the independent pizzeria operator—who often doesn’t have access to large corporations’ ability to engage in market research. And, with such impressive numbers, these statistics are also vital to the restaurant and food industries as a whole.

The PMQ Pizza Power Report offers an in-depth analysis of the pizza industry. Since 2000, PMQ has gathered information and calculated statistics and industry trends for use by pizzeria operators. The top chains are broken down by store units and average store sales, and the report also provides an in-depth look at state-specific information on pizzerias.

This year, PMQ supplemented the Pizza Power Report with The PMQ 200, which lists the top 200 pizza chains in the United States and how they compare with each other in a variety of categories, such as service type, alcohol service, and online ordering and delivery options. As expected, the top four chains are Pizza Hut, Domino’s, Papa John’s and Little Caesars–but the rest of the list may surprise you. (A complete Top 500 listing is also available.)

The Pizza Power Report and The PMQ 200 can be found in the September issue of PMQ’s Pizza Magazine (free subscriptions are available), as well as online at The September issue also covers the growing Chinese pizza market, cost-control measures to keep your business out of the red, and a variety of food topics, including onions, crab toppings and nontraditional menu items.
