Washington, D.C.-based Pizzeria Paradiso tweaked its politically themed “United States of Pizza: Women’s Slice of the Pie” promotion to celebrate International Women’s Day on Friday and urge women to become politically engaged.
All five Pizzeria Paradiso locations donated 100 percent of the day’s sales to She Should Run, a nonprofit that promotes women leaders and encourages women to run for office. Owned by Ruth Gresser, Pizzeria Paradiso is in the middle of an ongoing promo featuring a series of special state-themed pizzas that honor female politicians. Last week’s Virginia-themed pizza paid homage to Congresswomen Elaine Luria, Abigail Spanberger and Jennifer Wexton. The pie featured Virginia country ham, cheddar cheese, cherry tomatoes, creamed corn, black-eyed peas, collard greens and onions.
Upcoming specials will honor female politicians from Connecticut (a New Haven-style pie with sauce, mozzarella and oregano) and Texas (beef cooked in wild chili sauce, orange cheddar, scallions, cilantro and avocado).
The James Beard Foundation recently named Gresser a semifinalist in the Outstanding Restaurateur category for the 2019 James Beard Awards.
