Ruth Gresser, owner of Washington, D.C.-based Pizzeria Paradiso, has launched a new pizza promotion themed around a topic dear to her heart: women in politics.
Gresser has unveiled a weekly series of pizzas that spotlight female elected officials from New York to Hawaii. The promotion, called “United States of Pizza: Women’s Slice of the Pie,” launched this week with a focus on New York. It pays homage to Lt. Governor Kathy Hochul; Senator Kirsten E. Gillibrand; and U.S. Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Carolyn Maloney, Elise Stefanik, Grace Meng, Kathleen Rice, Nita Lowey, Nydia Velazquez and Yvette Clark.
The New York-style pie is made with buffalo tomato sauce, chicken and gorgonzola and fontina cheeses.
Gresser and her team of chefs at the five Pizzeria Paradiso locations have already developed 10 pizzas for the series, with more to come, according to WTOP.com. Additional pizzas and their respective states include:
Arizona—the Pozole Pizza, featuring hominy, pork, chiles, cabbage, queso fresco and queso seco
California—the Cioppino Pizza, made with shrimp, mussels, tomatoes, onions, peppers and Cioppino
Connecticut—a New Haven-style pie made with tomato sauce, mozzarella and oregano
Hawaii—the Pineapple Farm Pizza, topped with pineapple, prosciutto, red onion, fontina and rosemary
Illinois—the Hot Dog Pizza, featuring an onion sauce, Chicago hot dogs, provolone and hot dog relish
Rhode Island—a seafood pie boasting clams, mussels, shrimp, tomatoes, peppers, onions, linguica and grematola
Texas—a Texas Chile Pizza featuring beef cooked in a chile sauce, orange cheddar cheese, scallions and cilantro with avocado
Washington—the Apple Orchard pizza, topped with apples, brussel sprouts, portabella mushrooms, red onions, thyme and cheddar
Gresser has paid tribute to female politicians before, most recently prior to last fall’s mid-term elections. She and her team developed a series of pizzas inspired by female Democrats running for office around the U.S.
