Pizza Hut is putting one of its longest-running brand assets back in the spotlight this summer, using its BOOK IT! reading program, a new Box Tops for Education partnership and a family meal deal to drive higher sales and engagement with parents and young diners.

The brand, which has struggled over the past two years and could have a new owner soon, is turning back the clock to better times with the launch of Hut Originals, a summer platform built around Pizza Hut nostalgia. That includes the brand’s red-roof restaurants, red cups, checkered tablecloths, birthday parties, arcade tables and the BOOK IT! program. While the campaign includes consumer-facing promotions and throwback elements, the operator takeaway is clear: Pizza Hut is leaning into emotional brand equity and community ties at a time when its same-store sales are on the decline.

$4 Billion Sale (More or Less) Could Be in the Cards for a Pizza Giant

As part of the campaign, Pizza Hut is bringing back its BOOK IT! Summer of Stories program, which runs from June through August. Parents with children in pre-K through sixth grade can use the BOOK IT! mobile app to set monthly reading goals. When those goals are met, children can earn a free Personal Pan Pizza at participating Pizza Hut locations.

Pizza Hut will also offer a one-day nostalgia promotion on Wednesday, June 10. Guests who bring in a BOOK IT! button from any year to participating Pizza Hut restaurants can receive a free Personal Pan Pizza.

For the first time, Pizza Hut is also partnering with General Mills and Box Tops for Education to give families a way to support local schools. Through the promotion, families can earn Box Tops for eligible schools by scanning receipts from Pizza Hut’s BOOK IT! Family Meal, which includes one medium one-topping pizza and two one-topping Personal Pan Pizzas for $14.99. Pizza Hut said a portion of proceeds from each BOOK IT! Family Meal will support the BOOK IT! program and educational literacy.

For pizzeria operators, the campaign offers a look at how a national chain is combining several marketing levers into one summer push: nostalgia, kids’ incentives, school support, family value and limited-time traffic drivers. BOOK IT! has been associated with Pizza Hut for decades, giving the chain a built-in community connection that newer loyalty programs often struggle to replicate.

The Hut Originals campaign also includes the recently launched Crispy Parm Pan Pizza, along with planned throwback menu offers, merchandise partnerships and Pizza Hut Classic location experiences throughout the summer.
