Pizza Fusion Founders Lobbying for Environmental Action
Organic, eco-friendly pizza franchise founders to meet with State Representative Ron Klein to reinforce the environmental importance of the Safe Climate Act (H.R.1590)
Fort Lauderdale, Fla., August 27, 2007 – Pizza Fusion’s (www.pizzafusion.com) motto is “Saving the Earth, One Pizza at a Time.” Their green restaurant concept practices a number of environmental initiatives, such as delivering their food in company owned hybrid vehicles, offsetting their power consumption with the purchase of renewable energy certificates and building LEED certified establishments (to name a few). However, founders Michael Gordon and Vaughan Lazar aren’t satisfied with their environmental reach. So, on Wednesday, August 29 at 10:00 a.m., they’re meeting with Florida State Representative Ron Klein to reinforce the environmental significance of the Safe Climate Act (H.R.1590). The Safe Climate Act sets greenhouse gas emissions targets and required actions necessary to avoiding dangerous, irreversible warming of our planet.
“Influencing society toward a more sustainable future is extremely important,” Vaughan Lazar, co-founder of Pizza Fusion, explains. “Political action must be taken to create a positive change in the way we live and work, which is absolutely necessary to avoiding a dramatic decline in the quality of life for generations ahead of us. As individuals, we must reach out to our communities and political officials to make these necessary changes occur.”
Scientific studies tell us we face a risk of irreversible and devastating global warming if global temperatures increase by more than 3.6°F. The Safe Climate Act addresses the issue by freezing U.S. greenhouse gas emissions in 2010, at the 2009 levels. Then, beginning in 2011, it cuts emissions by roughly 2% per year, reaching 1990 emissions levels by 2020. After 2020, it cuts emissions by roughly 5% per year. By 2050, emissions will be 80% lower than in 1990.
The Safe Climate Act, introduced on Mar 21, 2007, is currently in the first stage of the legislative process and has been referred to the House Energy and Commerce, the Subcommittee on Energy and Air Quality, and the House Foreign Affairs, of which Representative Ron Klein is a member. The Safe Climate Act is currently co-sponsored by 140 state representatives.
Gordon and Lazar will be taking their environmental initiatives to their local governments to persuade them to expand their existing recycling programs to broaden their recycling capabilities and to add more recycling bins throughout their communities. Their past efforts include organizing beach clean-ups, sponsoring environmental projects, speaking on environmental topics and hosting various environmental seminars.
