(Chicago) The National Restaurant Association announced today that it has signed an agreement to make Pearson the exclusive academic distribution partner for the Association’s ServSafe Alcohol® program. The ServSafe Alcohol training materials instruct restaurant and foodservice employees on responsible alcohol service, including alcohol law, recognizing and preventing intoxication, checking identification, and managing difficult situations. Pearson began taking ServSafe Alcohol orders April 1, 2010.

The ServSafe Alcohol program was developed with input from experts in the foodservice, regulatory, legal, academic, medical and insurance fields. Working with National Restaurant Association Solutions, a wholly owned subsidiary of the National Restaurant Association, these experts determined and confirmed the tasks that the front-of-the-house needs to know in order to serve alcohol responsibly. The result is practical content that provides important information on alcohol law.

Pearson is also the exclusive academic distributor of the Association’s ManageFirst Program and ServSafe® food safety program, a “one stop shop” for management training, food safety and responsible alcohol curricular solutions for the academic market.

“We are excited to expand our partnership with Pearson Education to bring ServSafe Alcohol training to a wider audience,” said David Gilbert, Chief Operating Officer of the National Restaurant Association and Executive Director, National Restaurant Association Solutions. “ServSafe Alcohol sets the standard of excellence for responsible alcohol service training in our industry. Through this partnership, we are strengthening our efforts to provide restaurant industry professionals the information, tools, and resources they need to improve business, and help guests safely enjoy their restaurant experience.”

“This agreement is the latest step in our burgeoning relationship with the National Restaurant Association, which already includes our partnership in their ServSafe food safety and ManageFirst® programs,” said Vernon Anthony, editor-in-chief, career publishing, Pearson. “Responsible alcohol service is a critical issue, and we look forward to helping ServSafe Alcohol reach academic instructors and students. ServSafe Alcohol training and certification play a critical role in developing the career of educated foodservice professionals that are trained in proper responsible alcohol practices.”
