There are plenty of lists that rank the best pizzerias in the U.S., with some breaking it down by state. But how many lists have ranked the best specific pizza sold in each state? That’s exactly what a new one from Taste of Home sets out to do, while also calling attention to the explosion of culinary creativity that has rocked the pizza industry in recent years.

There are some usual suspects: Frank Pepe Pizza Napoletana’s White Clam Pizza took the top spot in Connecticut; Giordano’s Deep-Dish Cheese Pizza was ranked No. 1 in Illinois; and Bleecker Street Pizza’s Nonna Maria Pizza claimed best pizza in New York.

There are also some under-the-radar and even downright quirky selections that will raise eyebrows: a Tater-Tot Pizza from Rhombus Guys in Grand Forks, North Dakota, and a Sriracha Shrimp Pizza from Pies & Pints in Fayetteville, West Virginia. Meanwhile, the wildly original Fried Rice Pizza at Honolulu’s Proof Public House almost certainly turns heads with toppings like char siu pork, kimchi, pocho sausage and oyster sauce.

Let’s not forget the Tuna Melt pizza at Flying Pie Pizzaria in Boise or the Cold Picked Lobster Pizza from Cornerstone Artisanal Pizza & Craft Beer in Ogunquit, Maine. And next time you’re in the Minneapolis/St. Paul region, you’ll want to try Black Sheep Pizza’s pie topped with Persian beef, tomatoes, feta and harissa (pictured below).

In the Sunshine State, Satchel’s Pizza, a funky-cool Gainesville shop spotlighted by PMQ back in 2012, earned top honors for owner Satchel Raye’s Custom Pie, which can be made with a variety of unusual toppings like chorizo tempeh, broccoli and sun-dried tomatoes. And Hideaway Pizza, an Oklahoma City favorite, offers the Hideaway Special, with a different topping on every slice.
