According to the Republican Herald, “Fans flocked to a hometown pizzeria March 27 to meet jazz great Dave Pell.”
“‘I just like to play my horn,’ said Pell, now in his 80s, as he welcomed fans. As a tenor saxophone player, Pell became one of the stars of the Les Brown Band of Renown and remained with the band until 1955. Brown, the late band leader, hailed from Reinerton. Pell has been a resident of California since the 1940s and still has five or six places where he likes to perform about once a month, he said. He formed the Dave Pell Octet and is a successful album producer who has provided soundtracks for the movie industry. Pictures of him with one of his prized horns – a Dolnet tenor saxophone belonging to the late Lester Young – were among the photos he autographed for fans. He played that instrument March 26 and 27 during the Les Brown Weekend, coordinated through the Williams Valley School District music department.”
