Two Detroit pizzerias are turning Honolulu Blue in honor of their beloved Lions’ upcoming appearance in the NFL playoffs.
Elephant & Co. and Mootz Pizzeria + Bar have both added Lions-themed specialty pizzas to the menu as their once-beleaguered hometown team gets ready to face the Washington Commanders on January 18. And if you didn’t know, Honolulu blue is the description of the blue color in the Lions’ iconic uniforms.
Elephant & Co., a Detroit-style joint, says its Honolulu Blue BBQ pizza is “as bold as Detroit’s defense and as dynamic as our offense.” It will feature “fried onions for grit, ham and bacon for power, BBQ sauce for that smooth finish [and] pineapples for a little sweetness—because winning tastes so good.”
Meanwhile, Mootz, which specializes in the New York style, will proffer not one but two Honolulu Blue pies. Both feature pineapple dyed—you guessed it—blue. The Honolulu Blue Pizza boasts a New York City sauce, mozzarella, ham, bacon and the blue-dyed pineapple. The Spicy Honolulu Blue Pizza comes topped with mozz, “fire chicken,” jalapeños, banana peppers, red onions, a “fire BBQ sauce,” and the same blue-dyed pineapple.

For every sale of its 14” specialty pizzas, Mootz will donate $1 to the Detroit Lions Foundation, which supports youth in underserved communities.
The Detroit Lions have enjoyed their best season in the team’s history this year, and the Motor City’s hopes are high for a first-ever Super Bowl appearance. The team’s last bid for the NFL championship was in 1957, prior to the Super Bowl era.
