Anthony Mangieri is back at No. 1 on 50 Top Pizza’s ranking of the best pizzerias on the planet.

In a repeat of 2022, Mangieri’s Una Pizza Napoletana in New York has been named the world’s best pizzeria by the Italy-based international guide, which is curated by Barbara Guerra, Luciano Pignataro and Albert Sapere. The verdict was announced in an awards ceremony held on September 11 at the Teatro Mercadante in Naples.

Also representing the U.S., Tony Gemignani landed high on the list again, this time in sixth place for Tony’s Pizza Napoletana in San Francisco. Gemignani also won the Pizza of the Year 2024–Latteria Sorrentina Award for the Mission Impossible pizza at Tony’s Pizza Napoletana.

The remainder of the top 10 is a global mix of powerhouse pizza concepts, largely of the Neapolitan variety. Second place ended in a tie between Diego Vitagliano Pizzeria in Naples and I Masanielli by Francesco Martucci in Caserta, who, by the way, tied for first place in 50 Top Pizza’s 2024 list of the best pizzerias in Italy.

On the third step of the podium is The Pizza Bar on 38th in Tokyo, managed by Daniele Cason, which was also No. 1 for 50 Top Pizza Asia–Pacific 2024. Fourth place went to Confine in Milan, owned by Francesco Capece and Mario Ventura, and Michele Pascarella of Napoli on the Road in London took fifth place.

Following sixth-place Tony’s Pizza Napoletana were I Tigli in San Bonifacio, owned by Simone Padoan (No. 7); Sartoria Panatieri in Barcelona, owned by Rafa Panatieri and Jorge Sastre (No. 8); 50 Kalò in Naples, owned by Ciro Salvo (No. 9); and Seu Pizza Illuminati in Rome, owned by Pier Daniele Seu (No. 10).

Giorgia Caporuscio, owner of Don Antonio in New York, captured the Empower Women–Fedegroup Award “for having inspired female pizza makers all over the world, because making pizza has never been culturally considered to be the work of women,” 50 Top Pizza stated. “The fact that it has always been this way does not mean that it is right or that it should always be this way.  Change does not happen on its own.”

Meanwhile, the Pizza Maker of the Year 2024–Ferrarelle Award went to Matheus Ramos from QT Pizza Bar in São Paulo, Brazil.

“50 Top Pizza is a large community for quality pizza in the world,” Guerra, Pignataro and  Sapere said in a statement. “In 2024, we have 2,500 venues present in the guide, including the independent pizzerias and artisan chains. This is a great source of pride for us. A product like pizza has no limits and knows no boundaries because it is the most well-known and best-loved food in the entire world.”

50 Top Pizza described top-ranked Una Pizza Napoletana as a “very New York-style pizzeria reminiscent of the New York that becomes more beautiful and fascinating outside the windows of Uptown.”

The guide continued: “In a country always accustomed to putting everything on pizza, Anthony proposes only the purest tradition in toppings, with extraordinary quality ingredients. [With the] Marinara, Margherita, Cosacca and a pizza that changes every day, based on market ingredients, the dough nods to the contemporary, but is so personal that it probably cannot be classified. Good, tasty, true, it has the aroma and flavor of pizza.”

In addition to his sixth-place finish worldwide and the Pizza of the Year award, Tony’s Pizza Napoletana was named the No. 2 best pizzeria in the U.S. earlier this year.

“Whether it’s Neapolitan pizza, New York-style, Detroit-style, Sicilian or any other style of pizza, Tony Gemignani is a true guarantee,” 50 Top Pizza stated. “The Neapolitan pizza is excellent, offered in three versions—Marinara, Margherita and Capodimonte—but the type that will surprise you the most is the Detroit-style, [which is] truly remarkable, with a generous topping, just as it should be, and a really interesting bite. The real novelty is the possibility of trying a tasting menu, lasting two and a half hours, for seven pizza tastings, offering a truly immersive journey into the world of pizza.”
