Hilton Head, S.C. — (August 19, 2010) Inspired by the hit Travel Channel TV show “Man vs. Food,” Giuseppi’s Pizza & Pasta in Bluffton has issued a challenge to all Blufftonians – Can you consume 28 inches of one-topping pizza in one hour?

Giuseppi’s introduced its Big Unit 28-inch pizza at its Bluffton location back in June and the reaction to it has been “surprising and humorous,” says Lori Taylor, Managing Partner of the location.  “First of all, there’s the name that people love to joke about.  And then when people order the pizza for the table, they really aren’t picturing what 28 inches of pizza looks like.  So when it is presented to the table, we have been able to get some humorous photos of people’s reactions,” Taylor says.
The Man vs. Big Unit Challenge was issued via the restaurant’s Facebook page in early July and there were immediately two takers.  “We had a feeling the guys would be stepping up to the plate,” says Taylor.

The first challenger, Justin Lane of Bluffton, had to stop eating with a little more than half of the pizza remaining.  “The bread is what gets people,” Lane says of the difficulty he had during the challenge.  When asked whether he will try the challenge again he says, “Yes I will.”  He offers his advice to future challenge-takers:  “Don’t drink a lot of your drink, soak the crust in water and eat the crust last.”

The second competitor came the closest so far to meeting the challenge, leaving only three pieces remaining.  “We were really rooting for him to finish,” says Taylor.  “After he came so close, I’m actually hoping for someone to finish so we can have our first winner on our Wall of Fame,” she says.  Anyone who completes the challenge, consuming all 28 inches of a one-topping pizza and its crust within one hour will not only receive their pizza free, but they also receive a Big Unit t-shirt, a $50.00 gift card and their photo and name on the Wall of Fame.

Taylor says that she has already had another challenger contact her to attempt the feat this week.  “I think word is getting out there and maybe people are actually egging each other on to try it,” Taylor says.
