Loui’s Pizza, a family-owned, 47-year-old eatery in Hazel Park, Michigan, is the No. 1 pizza spot in the Midwest, at least according to a new list released by crowd-review site Yelp.
Yelp has named its “Top 100 Pizza Spots in the Midwest” for 2024, with Loui’s leading the pack, followed by Futuro in Indianapolis at No. 2; Pequod’s Pizza in Chicago in third place; Tyler’s Pizzeria & Bakery in Reynoldsburg, Ohio, taking fourth; and Milly’s Pizza in the Pan, also in Chicago, claiming the No. 5 slot.
“The Midwest is the birthplace of some of America’s most iconic and beloved types of pies,” the Yelp story notes. “The region has given us hearty Chicago deep-dish pizza and popular Detroit-style pan pizza….Also trending this year: thin-crust Midwestern pies. Those include Chicago tavern-style pizza…as well as classic St. Louis pizza, featuring an even thinner, crispy unleavened crust topped with distinctive Provel cheese instead of mozzarella.”
Yelp also took note of some recent pizza trends, including spicy toppings—like a secret family BBQ sauce at Loui’s, and pies made with hot honey and jalapeños at Futuro—and creative toppings, such as the 12 South (smoked gouda, bacon and tomato jam) at No. 7-ranked Pizzeoli Wood Fired Pizza in St. Louis and the Schnabel Wobble (shrimp, andouille sausage and etouffee sauce) at No. 8 Brittany’s Brick Oven Pizza in Madison, Indiana.
Here’s how Yelp explained its selection process for the best pizzerias in the Midwest:
“We identified businesses in the pizza category with a large concentration of reviews mentioning relevant keywords, and then ranked those spots using a number of factors, including the total volume and ratings of reviews mentioning those keywords. We also consulted with our Community Managers to zero in on which spots Yelpers were loving. If a business with multiple locations appeared on the list more than once, we only included the highest-rated location. The list considered businesses in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. We included up to 5 businesses per city, as indicated on Yelp, for geographic diversity. All businesses were marked open on Yelp as of June 10, 2024. When available, all businesses on this list have a passing health score as of June 10, 2024.”
A Yelper said No. 1 Loui’s, which specializes in the Motor City style, has “hands-down the best pizza in Detroit.”
At No. 2, Futuro serves both a thin-crust tavern-style pie and a “neo-Detroit-style pizza” with a caramelized cheese crust. Praising that Indianapolis shop, a Yelp reviewer said, “I don’t want to eat any pizza other than Futuro ever again.”
While Pequod’s took third place in this list, it was ranked No. 1 on Yelp Elites’ Top 100 Pizza Spots for 2024. Yelp noted that Pequod’s pies are “often hailed as prime examples of Chicago-style pizza,” although they’re not traditional deep-dish pizzas. Rather, according to manager Jay Esper, they’re “almost a mixture of deep-dish and Detroit-style.” A Yelp Elite reviewer said the pies are “near perfection, if not perfection itself.”
No. 4 Tyler’s Pizzeria & Bakery offers wood-fired, sourdough-crust pizzas for takeout only. A Yelp Elite reviewer wrote, “The crust is perfect—thick enough on the edges to get that full, creamy bread taste, thin and sturdy enough to bind with the other flavors and stand up to the heavy toppings.”
Fifth-place Milly’s Pizza in the Pan, meanwhile, makes pan-style pies inspired by the legendary Burt’s Place. “But mine has evolved,” owner Robert Maleski told Yelp. “It’s not as thick, and we leave an edge of cheese around the perimeter to give it a cheesy-bread feel. It looks heavy, but it’s very light.” A Yelp Elite reviewer noted, “Each veggie had a great crunch to it. The sauce is rich and not too sweet. The crust is perfectly crispy and flavorful while maintaining a soft dough on the inside.”
