Is being addicted to pizza a bad thing? New research cites pizza, French fries and ice cream as the top culprits in people losing control over how much of a specific food they inhale. The study, published in February in PLOS One, asked 120 University of Michigan students, and another group of about 400 adults, to rate 35 different types of food — from pizza to broccoli — in terms of craveability.
CNN reports that pizza, unsurprisingly to pizza fans, topped the list. Foods with healthier reps like fruits and vegetables (strawberries, carrots and broccoli, for example) were at the bottom of the list. The study's lead author Erica Schulte compares our favorite binge foods to drugs, saying, like heroin, “… highly processed foods may be intentionally manufactured to be particularly rewarding through the addition of fat and refined carbohydrates, like white flour and sugar.” Of course not all pizza is made with refined flour and extra sugar and the report failed to address another recent study conducted by the Center for Generational Kinetics this year that found the nation's "biggest pizza lovers" are women in their 30s who exercise twice a week.
