This Brooklyn Legend Claims Top Spot On New Best-Pizzerias List

One can hardly be on the internet these days without seeing a new “best of” list of pizzerias. That doesn’t make them any less exciting, though, does it?

The latest list, created by TimeOut, an English media company, ranked the 19 best American pizza joints. It’s a well-rounded list, with a slew of different pizza styles represented, from Neapolitan to New York to deep-dish.

Fifteen different states are covered on the list: New York, Connecticut, Illinois, Arizona, New Mexico, Michigan, Minnesota, Washington, Florida, Massachusetts, Nevada, Georgia, Pennsylvania and California. (At this time, those from New Jersey are welcome to begin compiling a formal letter of complaint.)

Some notable pizzerias on the list include Flour+Water Pizzeria in San Francisco (to be featured on PMQ’s January-February 2024 cover) checking in at No. 4. Representing the Pacific Northwest, Apizza Scholls in Portland, Oregon (No. 6) joins Serious Pie in Seattle (No. 10). Farina Pizzeria & Wine Bar in Albuquerque rounded out the list at No. 19 and got New Mexico into the mix.

Topping the list is one of the world’s legendary pizza joints, Di Fara Pizza, founded in Brooklyn by the late Dom DeMarco, who passed away last year and left his business in the capable hands of his descendants. New Haven-style progenitor Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana landed in the No. 2 spot, followed at No. 3 by Chris Bianco’s Pizzeria Bianco in Phoenix.
