(Press Release) Detroit, MI,  May 24, 2012- Detroit Style Pizza Co. today announced it is offering tours of its new pizzerias this summer. The tour gives parents and youth group leaders a way to pack local history, culinary skills and family-friendly fun in a single afternoon. Designed and conducted by World Champion Pizza Maker Shawn Randazzo, the tour is offered at his St. Clair Shores and Clinton Township pizzerias.

The tour turns education into interactive fun when Randazzo tells the story of Detroit style pizza, asks engaging questions and reveals interesting pizza facts (did you know that Detroit style pizza is nicknamed “upside down” or “red top” pizza because the signature red sauce is ladled on after baking?). Groups are guided through the Detroit Style Pizza Co. kitchen, where they learn about the artistry that goes into making the perfect pizza dough, how to properly position toppings for even baking and why deck ovens make the best pizzas.

Next, kids get to make their own pizza masterpieces, totally hands-on: Kids line their dough with pepperoni, shred their own cheese and sprinkle on their favorite toppings before Randazzo loads the pizzas into deck ovens. While they’re waiting for their pizzas to bake, kids can compete in a box folding contest. The top three box folders win Detroit Style Pizza Co. gift cards.

Finally, kids enjoy a pizza party and the best part of all: Eating their very own delicious Detroit style pizzas.

“Our cub scouts loved doing a go-see-it at Detroit Style Pizza Co.,” said Kim Price, Den Leader for the Pack 371 Tiger Cubs in Clinton Township. “The only thing better than the wonderful staff was the amazing pizza.”

“A lot of excitement builds up for the box folding contest, but the greatest part of the tour for me is getting to watch the kids enjoy the pizzas they made. They’re proud of their masterpieces, and they should be,” said Randazzo. “I’m proud that we are able to share an experience that’s a blast for the kids and even fun and interesting for adults. Everyone leaves with a little knowledge about Detroit history, a sense of accomplishment and a full belly. Kids are brutally honest, so when they leave with a smile, I know I’ve done my job.”

The Detroit Style Pizza Co. Tour lasts approximately 90 minutes and is ideal for groups of 10 to 15 individuals. Photo opportunities of the kids in action are available during the tour. The fee is $10 per person. The Detroit Style Pizza Co. Tour is popular among Girl Scout and Boy Scout troops, who can use the experience as a fun way to earn scouting badges.
