Dogs bark for a lot of reasons—to scare off intruders, to get attention, to let it be known that you’d better put them outside fast or there’ll be an accident on your brand-new carpet.
When humans bark at Village Pizzeria in Coronado, California, on August 26, it will be for a good cause. Not only will they get a 50% discount on their pizza, the other half of the price will be donated to PAWS of Coronado, a nonprofit animal shelter.
Village Pizzeria will celebrate National Dog Month with a fundraiser for PAWS and a whole lotta barking going on. August 26 itself is National Dog Day, founded in 2004 by pet and family lifestyle expert Colleen Paige. Village Pizzeria will honor dog owners and dogs of all breeds while promoting pet adoption that day.

Customers are encouraged to bring their pups to the event, which will include a photo booth for pets and parents, free dog bandanas and “pupsicles” for man’s best friend. For those who don’t own dogs—yet—PAWS of Coronado will set up an information booth on the Village Pizzeria patio to provide information about fostering and adopting pets. They will also bring shelter dogs to meet and greet customers and, with any luck, pair pets with people for the perfect match.
Pet adoption events have become a solid promotion for pizzerias around the country. Some owners also deliver their boxed pizzas with taped flyers touting dogs that are up for adoption at local shelters and rescue centers.
Founded in 2002, Village Pizzeria offers East Coast-inspired pies—Sicilian squares and New York-style—at two locations in Coronado. The company also creates excitement with a signature “pie of the month.” For August, it’s the Maui Wowie topped with Spam, red onion, pineapple and habanero peppers. Last month, the pie of the month was dubbed The Heat of Summer and featured bacon, sweet Italian sausage links, spicy crumbled Italian sausage and jalapeños.
In June, Village Pizzeria offered a fan favorite, the Elote Pie, made with roasted corn, mayonesa con limon, cotija and mozzarella, dusted with Flamin’ Hot Cheeto dust and cilantro.
