Emmy Squared Pizza, known for its crispy-bottomed Detroit-style pizza, has a new store in Richmond, Virginia, as the Brooklyn-born brand continues to widen its footprint around the U.S.

Emmy Squared opened the new location on May 28 in the Short Pump Town Center but held its grand-opening event on June 21 with live music from School of Rock student performers, exclusive cocktail and mocktail tastings by Spirits of Alchemy, giveaways, and complimentary samples. The freebies included Emmy’s The Colony Pizza, the award-winning Le Big Matt burger, and seasonal menu favorites. The first 25 people in line received one free pizza each month for a year. Guests also entered a raffle for additional prizes, such as free food, an Apple Watch and an iPad.

“Richmond is the kind of city that understands flavor, craft and community,” said Troy Tracy, CEO of Emmy Squared Pizza. “Short Pump gives us the opportunity to connect with people who value bold food and good energy. We’re excited to bring our signature pizzas and Brooklyn soul to the neighborhood.”

As Tracy told PMQ Pizza’s Charlie Pogacar in a January episode of Peel: A PMQ Pizza Podcast, Emmy Squared can be described as “Detroit-style with a Brooklyn soul.”

“Detroit has that hardworking grit and drive…and Brooklyn soul, meaning culinary mecca,” Tracy explained. “When you put those two together, we have a bit of a unique swagger in the space.” 

Emmy Squared Pizza was founded by Emily Hyland and Matthew Hyland in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, in 2016. It quickly gained a cult following for crafting a full-flavor experience with small-batch dough made daily, house-made sauces and syrups, and a lineup of inventive cocktails designed to be shared.

The opening continues Emmy Squared Pizza’s momentum following new locations in Las Vegas and Charlottesville, Virginia, and the upcoming opening of a store in Greenwich, Connecticut.
