(Denmark, Wis.) – Wisconsin cheese company BelGioioso Cheese earned four distinguished awards at the 28th Biennial World Championship Cheese Contest held in Madison, Wisconsin March 16 – 18, 2010.  These awards honor the family-owned and operated cheese company as a producer of exceptional Italian cheeses.

First place, Best of Class Gold Medal: BelGioioso Parmesan

BelGioioso Parmesan earned the top award in the “Parmesan” category. Made from fresh local milk, each wheel is aged in special caves for over 10 months.  BelGioioso Cheesemakers carefully inspect and hand-turn each wheel to ensure a consistent aging process.  This expert care develops BelGioioso Parmesan’s sweet, nutty flavor and tantalizing aroma.

First place, Best of Class Gold Medal: BelGioioso Mascarpone

In the “Open Class Soft Cheeses” category, BelGioioso Mascarpone earned a Gold Medal.  This naturally sweet, yet surprisingly light, soft Italian cheese is made daily from the freshest Wisconsin sweet cream. Its soft creamy texture spreads with ease and blends well with other ingredients.

Third place Bronze Medal: BelGioioso Sharp Provolone

The new “Provolone, Aged” category awarded BelGioioso Sharp Provolone with a Bronze Medal.  This Provolone is created from a recipe rich in tradition and carries on a legacy of good taste.  Never smoked or bleached, this all-natural cheese is made from whole cow’s milk and aged in special curing rooms.

Third place Bronze Medal: BelGioioso CreamyGorg®

The “Gorgonzola” category awarded BelGioioso CreamyGorg® with a Bronze Medal.  This unique soft, blue-veined cheese exclusively from BelGioioso is aged 90 days, and has a full, earthy flavor and creamy texture.

Entries in this year’s contest rose 18% over 2008, with 2,313 cheeses and butters presented by 20 nations. The judging panel, comprised of 30 international cheese-evaluation experts, worked three days to select medalists in 79 cheese and butter categories.
