Chicago Deep-Dish Beats Out New York-Style for New Potato Chip Flavor

Don’t kill the messenger, New Yorkers, but your pizza apparently wasn’t good enough for a new type of pizza-flavored potato chip introduced by Frito-Lay this week. You shouldn't feel too bad, though – the uber-trendy Detroit style didn't make the cut either.

In developing its “Taste of America” line of chips, Frito-Lay chose Chicago deep-dish pizza over the classic New York slice. According to the company's website, the Lay’s chip was inspired by the stuffed deep-dish pie at Giordano’s. It’s one of a dozen regionally inspired flavors being rolled out later this summer.

Other new flavors include New England Lobster Roll, Chile Con Queso, Cajun Spice, Crab Spice, Fried Pickles with Ranch, Pimento Cheese, Thai Sweet Chili, Ketchup, Fried Green Tomatoes, Bacon-Wrapped Jalapeno Poppers, and West Coast Truffle Fries.

Tina Mahal, senior director of marketing at Frito-Lay, told USA Today that the flavors were chosen based on consumer feedback in different regions of the country. They’re only available in the relevant regions, so don't expect to find the Fried Green Tomatoes chip in, say, San Francisco.

“People feel a deep connection to home,” Mahal told USA Today. “They also feel that they want their brands to understand them.”
