Finding out everything you need to know about the competition and how to be successful in selecting the right location.

  1. Your first step would be to identify the facilities you would like information about. Fill in the first column with the name, address and telephone number of each identified location.
  2. Visit each store and count:
    1. Parking
    2. Seats
    3. Entrée price range
    4. Estimate revenues
    5. Comments
  3. While you are there you will need to gather more information from the owner or manager. You need to gain their trust in revealing information. You can say "I’ll bet you do 10k a week". With this they will usually respond.
  4. This spread sheet can be used to better understand the area you are planning to open in or purchase an existing establishment.
  5. You will need some demographics to help in the planning. Go to www.infods.com and click FREE DATA. Enter the zip code of the subject property.
  6. Low cost data is available at www.infousa.com . For only $3 you can purchase a complete report on any company to help you better understand the competition. Customer lists are also available at this site if you later want to do mailings.

Collecting data will take a small amount of time compared to the amount of money you could lose or the success you can achieve.

Good Luck!

Michael P. Cohen
