The New York Pizza Show $100,000 Jackpot You could walk away from PMQ’s New York Pizza Show, on March 9 to 11 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in Manhattan, with $100,000 in brand-new pizza equipment. All you have to do to win is come by the PMQ Pizza Equipment Showcase, select a six-digit number and be lucky. The purpose of the $100,000 prize is twofold: fi rst, to bring attention to the New York Pizza Show by offering a chance to win a big prize; second, to illustrate the leveraged impact that can be achieved through buying a little bit of time-tested marketing event insurance.

A few years ago (July 2004), I visited and did a story on Adam Greenburg from Potomac Pizza in Maryland during the grand opening of his third store. Adam offered his grand-opening guests a simple challenge: Select the correct order of the six magic pizza toppings from a list of 10. And if it matched his predetermined sealed-underglass list, the winner would be given the keys to a brand-new Hummer parked in front of his pizza business. The cost of the contest was not $60,000, but the much lower cost of a marketing insurance policy that specialized in spreading the risk and paying the bills, if and when someone correctly guessed the right combination.

I hope to see you in New York. Even if you don’t win the big prize, you will still learn something about chance-driven promotions. Visit www.newyorkpizzashow.com for more information.

Clarification
The NPD Group recently came to us with concerns about the numbers given in the Nov/Dec 2007 Pizza Power Report. It’s important to note that we use a number of different agencies to compile the report each year, and the numbers given are a result of taking all of the numbers provided, combining them and averaging them out.

NPD did want to point out that none of the figures released on page 41 of the report that relate to chains were provided by them, because they do not release pizza chain information. We appreciate the NPD Group’s feedback and look forward to working with them on next year’s report.

Coincidence or Fate?
Four years ago, PMQ;s Pizza Magazine, published in Oxford, Mississippi, created a second home for America’s richest pizza market by establishing the New York Pizza Show. Our goal was to explore and understand this abundantly rich market of experience and talent while sharing it with you in the success stories you’ve read about the pizza giants of New York. At precisely the same time, a local college graduate and avid pizza customer went from Oxford, Mississippi, to the New York football Giants with a similar idea. Eli Manning’s favorite pizza: thin-crust pepperoni.
