Thanks for the Visit!
I just want to thank you so much for the
photos and your compliments in the Jan/Feb
“Slice of the City: New York” story. I’m sorry
I missed you that day. If there is anything you
ever need that has to do with pizza, feel free to
contact me personally. Grazie mille, ciao!

Stan,
You’re welcome, and thank you for the great
pizza—it was one of our favorites. Believe it or
not, your garlic knots were the first ones I’ve
ever tasted—and well worth the wait!
Pizza Artistry
My name is Justin Ryan Emery, and I work
for a Pizza Hut located in Wellsboro, Pennsylvania
(a franchise under Daland Corporation).
My official duties are as a cook and driver
for the restaurant, which is well-known in our
small town for its quality of service and greattasting
food. I have a side job that was pretty
much handed to me one day: In the front of
the restaurant we have a small white board
that is always used for announcing specials to
our customers, and one day I asked the shift
manager on duty if I could write the specials
on the board. She said sure, and I did a sign for
the special Buffalo Wing Pizza. But, instead of
the plain writing, I decided to use my artistic
talents to fancy it up some. A couple of days
later, the same manager said, “Justin, would
you like to change the board?” Of course, I
jumped at the chance to once again make
something that would jump out at the customers.
That was in 2005.
From that day forward, my restaurant’s manager has given me fresh dry eraser markers to keep my artwork looking good. He’s even been known to say, “He does good work, creative. Just wish he would have told us he could do that when customers were saying they couldn’t read the board. Way to go, Emery!” My boss is a comedian. Customers have even written letters to us about our boards and complimented us on how creative they are. Of course, I get the jokes from my boss and other managers saying that I’m the one who is writing them and mailing them in!
One dream of mine since I can remember has been to be a cartoonist. The board is giving me the chance to express that. I talked to my manager one day, who also reads PMQ, and we decided to share some of my boards with you, your magazine and your staff, to show how my passion and dream of being a cartoonist is helping my new love for the restaurant I work for. To be honest, I’ve wanted to write to PMQ for some time and was deciding which of the many boards I have done and kept pictures of (some I forgot to photograph, since early 2005) that I should send. Now that I’ve gotten the guts to do it, I hope that you enjoy it as much as I have. Thank you for your time.

Justin,
Thanks for contacting us. Your signs are
very creative, and I’m sure they get a lot of attention
from your customers, as well as bring
smiles to many faces (always a nice bonus)!
I hope that those who read your letter and see your artwork will be inspired to get creative with their own signage. Keep up the good work!
