Pizza Hut, Papa John’s, Domino’s Doing Industry Big Favor
During the last 18 months Pizza Hut, Papa John’s and Domino’s have done our industry a gigantic favor. They have proven that Internet ordering is officially viable. Millions, if not billions of dollars are now being spent online for pizza. The big guys have opened the door for the rest of the industry with national promotions and by setting Internet ordering standards for pizza customers and training them how to order pizza online. This is not for Chinese food, not Mexican food, not hamburgers, but pizza. Internet ordering could be the biggest boost for our industry since delivery. Here’s more ammunition: the number one search request according to Google and City Search is, yes, pizza. Opportunity is knocking, but you won’t hear a sound. It’s coming in the form of an electronic order being telegraphed to your store through fax, POS, computer or cell phone. When customers order online, three things occur; orders happen quicker, less mistakes are made and ticket averages are significantly higher.
January/February Issue: The Internet Ordering Issue
As a result of our Pizza Power research, PMQ is currently working on a special January/February issue, which will explore online ordering in depth and document the various options which pizza stores can consider. If you have any experiences or recommendations for your fellow pizza operators please let our editor know.
You’ve Got to have Heart
That’s what the song from the 1950’s musical Damn Yankees says; “Baseball is only one half skill, the other half is something else…something bigger!” Maybe it was because the World Series was going on when I was looking over the PMQ edits for a story, which appears in this issue called Pizza My Heart, but comparisons between baseball and pizza instantly began popping up. Both baseball and pizza have passionate and opinionated fans. Both baseball and pizza have passionate and opinionated owners. Both have come to know New York as their spiritual home, and to be successful in either one you’ve got to have something more than a formal education. You’ve got to have heart.
There are two stories in this issue that have plenty of heart and may help you understand why you chose to go into the pizza business. I hope you’ll enjoy Pizza My Heart on page 72 and You Really Can Make Pizza Anywhere on page 52. Coincidentally, the World Series does take place during National Pizza Month.
PMQ goes digital
Did you know that the magazine you are reading also exists in a digital format? That means you can pass your PMQ around without giving it up. You can follow links right as they appear on the page and do what many of you have been asking about for a long time, be able to read the ads with the magazine when reading the issue online.
