How far should a restaurateur go to ensure he hires immigrants who can legally work in the U.S.? That turned out to be a $140,000 question for Pizzerias LLC, with 30-plus locations in Miami. In a settlement with the Department of Justice, the company will pay that amount as a penalty for insisting that immigrants, including lawful permanent residents, provide a Permanent Resident Card when applying for a job. The case illustrates a thorny problem for restaurants trying to stay on the right side of immigration law.
