Chicago is the No. 1 city for late-night food orders, and pizza is the item of choice, according to Seamless.com, a mobile and online service for ordering delivery and takeout food.

Seamless.com handles orders for more than 12,000 restaurants in the U.S. and the U.K. In a press release, it reported that Windy City residents place 14% of their food orders during the wee hours of the morning, earning Chicago the top spot for late-night munchies. Jim Hearn, the founder of Hungry Howie's Pizza & Subs, died from a sudden illness earlier this month. He was 71.

Under Hearn's leadership, what started out in 1973 as a small hamburger joint flourished into a chain with more than 550 locations around the country and two food distribution centers in Florida and Michigan. "If a North Pinellas, Florida, resident has ordered pizza from Hungry Howie's in the past 30 years, there is a very good chance that Jim delivered one of those orders," said Barry Devine, the company's marketing director. "Up until his final Friday rush, Jim would be found making pizzas and helping out with deliveries from one of several Hungry Howie's locations in North Pinellas."

No one likes being stuck for three hours in a plane that's still on the tarmac, but a little pizza can definitely ease the pain, as Delta Air Lines personnel learned recently.

The plane ended up stranded in Knoxville, Tennessee, after severe weather diverted the Boston-to-Atlanta flight. But disgruntled passengers cheered up a bit when a stack of pizzas was delivered to the plane, provided by a mystery person who may or may not have been the airplane's pilot. The pizzas, ordered from Pizza Hut, were delivered via police squad car with flashing lights.
