Talk about a Hail Mary pass—with a mediocre 5-8 record and a recent three-game losing streak, the Orlando Predators, an Arena Football League team, recently made a promise to its fans that it surely didn’t want to keep: If the team lost its June 22 match-up with the Pittsburg Power, the Predators would give away up to $1 million in free pizza to everyone in attendance and to the TV audience as well. The team partnered with Hungry Howie’s locations across central Florida for the payoff. But, with so much at stake, the Predators rose to the challenge on the gridiron, coming from behind to beat the Power 50-35. It was the second performance guarantee offered by the team in 2013—the Predators have also promised discounts for season-ticket renewals if they win fewer than 10 games this year.

Pizza Artist Recreates Iconic Paintings

Some artists work with paints and watercolors, others with marble or found objects. But for food artist Prudence Staite, the pizza crust has become her palette of choice. Staite has recreated several famous paintings—such as Vincent Van Gogh’s “Sunflowers,” Andy Warhol’s “Marilyn Monroe” and Edvard Munch’s “The Scream”—using pizza ingredients ranging from cheese and tomato sauce to black olives, pepperoni and bell peppers. The UK chain Pizza Express commissioned the artwork as part of its “Love Your Summer” promotion, which includes discounts for customers on music downloads, art purchases and movie tickets.

Chinese Pie Too Decadent for Americans?

A resounding “YUCK!” has been the American response to a pie from Pizza Hut China that features shrimp tempura, mayonnaise and a hot dog crust. The pizza appears to be inspired by the Japanese, who are fond of both ingredients. But what about the hot dog crust? That’s probably a way to “Americanize” the pizza. Even so, it’s ironic that the Chinese have created a pizza so decadent that even Americans won’t eat it!

Fundraiser Aids Camp For Kids With Cancer

As an eight-year-old, Jordan Mann wasn’t sure he’d live to be nine, due to a life-threatening form of bone cancer. Fortunately, with chemotherapy, Mann survived the disease, and now, as the manager of Marco Pizzeria and Restaurant in Derby, Connecticut, he works to help other kids do the same. Earlier this week, Marco Pizzeria hosted a fundraiser for Camp Rising Sun, a summer camp for children who have or have had cancer. From 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., 50 percent of dine-in and carryout proceeds were donated to a team of cyclists from the camp who will be riding in the CT Challenge Bike Ride, which raises money for cancer survivor programs. Mann attended Camp Rising Sun himself as a child and now volunteers there each year as a counselor.
