Today on This Week in Pizza: Wood-Burning Oven for Home Use; Patxi's Pizza Settles Complaint with City; and Pizza Wars 3 in Chicago

More than a dozen restaurants competed in Pizza Wars 3 in the Chicago suburb of Skokie recently, raising more than $10,000 for the local Education Foundation for Excellence, which provides financial aid and resources for Niles Township High School students.

In its third year, the event drew more than 850 people, who bought tickets to sample local pies and vote on their favorite. According to the Skokie Patch, the students themselves helped promote the competition through social media and by selling tickets. Pizzerias from both Skokie and surrounding communities participated, but a local restaurant, Village Inn, emerged as the winner. Funds will go to pay for everything from refurbished computers to school supplies and breakfast for students who demonstrate a financial need. (Photo by George Slefo, The Skokie Patch)

According to SFGate.com, the Detroit-area Buddy's Pizza chain is ready to fulfill its promise to use its line of Great Lakes-themed pizzas to support local environmental causes, donating $6,000 to the Alliance for the Great Lakes.

As reported in a previous issue of Pizza News Weekly, Buddy's Pizza last year launched a line of Great Lakes-themed pizzas and vowed to donate $1 of every pizza's sale to the environmental organization. The money will be used to benefit a restoration and education project aimed at returning 72 linear feet of shoreline and coastal wetlands on Detroit's Belle Isle as well as a litter reduction campaign.

Entrepreneur Kristian Tapaninaho has come up with a solution for pizza lovers who crave the taste of wood-fired pizza at home: a wood-burning oven that's the size of a carry-on suitcase.

According to Business Insider, the oven weighs about 11 pounds and measures 12x36x48 centimeters. The Finnish inventor used the crowd-funding website Kickstarter to raise development funds for the oven, which he calls the Uuni. It can reportedly reach 840 degrees Farenheit and takes 15 to 20 minutes to heat up.

In a move that caused the company's shares to nose-dive, frozen pizza maker Annie's initiated a voluntary recall this week of Annie's Homegrown Rising Crust Frozen Pizza due to possible fragments of metal in the pies, the Contra Costa Times reports.

The affected pizza products, sold in grocery stores and natural food stores around the U.S., have a "best by" date of between January 9 and September 14. Due to a faulty screen at a flour mill, the company said, tiny fragments of flexible metal mesh may have made it into the flour and pizza dough. "While no metal has been found in Annie's finished product, as a precaution, Annie's initiated this voluntary recall," the company said in a prepared statement. "There have been no consumer complaints, illnesses or injuries reported to date."
